Best Grocery Store Natural Hand Cream and Lotion

All this hand-washing during the pandemic has left my hands very dry these days. I was getting tired of using my go-to Gold Bond Ultimate Healing cream, which sometimes feels and smells too chemically (I mean, it does have an EWG rating of 9, which is bad for increasing cancer risk), so I decided to scour the internet for reviews on the best hand creams/lotions that uses more natural ingredients.

To narrow down the ones to try, I first checked for good reviews online, has decent EWG ratings (in the green or yellow) for better health and safety, easy to find at my local grocery stores, and has cute packaging!

So here's what I found at my local grocery store and how they stack up to each other:

Everyone Nourishing Lotion - Lavender + Aloe

$5.99/6 oz

The Honest Co. Organic All-Purpose Balm

$12.95/3.4 oz

J.R. Watkins Hand Cream - Lemon Cream

$8.99/3.3 oz

Weleda Skin Food Orginal Ultra-Rich Cream

$18.99/2.5 oz

O’ Keeffe’s Working Hands - Hand Cream

$5.99/2.7 oz

How it feels:

Watery because it’s a “lotion”, duh, more useful for larger body area application

How it feels:

Gritty and greasy. The grease feeling reminds me of Vaseline petroleum jelly. The little grits might be beeswax beads that were unable to dissolve in the mixture?

How it feels:

Thick and buttery soft as how one imagines hand creams should be and it melts into the skin without leaving any shine or oily feeling.

How it feels:

Uhm, this feels like I’m applying sunscreen, and leaves a sticky shine exactly like sunscreen.

How it feels:

What a unique texture!  Feels like I’m putting my fingers in a tub of cream cheese that magically melts into the skin. Good for spot-treating rough patches on the knuckles and cuticles.

How it smells:

I honestly don’t know what real lavender flowers smell like, but this smells fresh and clean, not overwhelming.

How it smells:

If you ever tried to make your own homemade natural ointments by buying bulk beeswax, and then wondering if your ointment is expired, this smells like that.

How it smells:

Like delicious lemon cream pie! Very strong and lingers for a while.

How it smells:

It smells like sunscreen and the powerful scent of the natural health/beauty aisle of Whole Foods.

How it smells:

Has no scent, just a faint whiff of the plastic from the plastic jar if I put my nose in it.

Verdict:

Will buy again because it is more bang for the buck with the largest quantity and lowest cost. Works fine to moisturize, and can be used for the rest of the body while feeling safe with the ingredients since it is EWG certified.

Verdict:

Never again! Even though this has the most natural ingredients and is USDA organic certified to boot, the application feels awful and greasy! Doesn’t smell great either.

Verdict:

Even though this one has bad EWG scoring due to the fragrance, I may consider buying again because the texture of this one is amazing and it wins for the cutest packaging! I originally wanted to get the Aloe & Green Tea version which may have a less powerful girly scent, but they do not carry that one at my grocery store, bummer.

Verdict:

Never again! Expensive and smells horrible. I just do not like the smell or texture of sunscreen. Not sure why there are so many rave reviews on this.

Verdict:

So this one is actually not in the "natural" section of the store, as one can see it is mostly chemicals in the ingredients, but I had to throw this one in since there were such consistent positive reviews online. Personally, I will probably not buy again due to the unappealing and not very sanitary jar. The tube version exists, but it has different ingredients on the label containing more bad chemicals like Aluminum, so that’s a disappointment.

Can you see the oil seeping out onto the paper of the Honest Co. all-purpose balm? Just not appealing although it has the best safe/healthy ingredients!

None of these are perfect for what I had in mind, but two comes close. If the Everyone was a bit more thick, it would be perfect. If the J.R. Watkins one has less fragrance, I would choose it for the best texture/feel and packaging!
