Most flattering

After many trial and error, this ASOS navy dress was my first revelation to what "looks good" on me.

Since this dress has no zippers or buttons, every time I squeeze into it, I feel like I gained weight and have outgrown the dress. But when I snap photos of myself in it, it looks just perfect. So these are the things I have learned from this dress:

1. If it's tighter, it looks better in photographs. My biggest problem in fashion, is that I have a habit of wearing loose clothing. When I was a kid, my parents purposely bought one size larger for all our clothing so that they would last longer "to grow into," which never seems to happen for me though. Then when I was a teenager with major self-conscious issues, I hid in baggy clothing. As an adult with a petite body, most women clothing on the market are loose on me by default. Thus when something fits perfectly, I find it too constricting and avoid it, which led to many complaints of my sloppy attire. But now I learned. If it's more fitted, it looks good. I suppose this is why the uncomfortable corset or spanx were invented. Although tall lanky ladies can get away with loose clothing, so I'm thinking it has something to do with proportions too.

2. Dark colors accentuates my skin tone. My favorite color is lavender and when I think of dressing up, I naturally take out my favorite color, which is lavender. But turns out, my favorite color washes me out. When I wear a dark shade like navy or black, I always seem to get more compliments how nice and luminous my skin looks. For Asians, I'm on the more pale peachy spectrum, so wearing something dark, brings out my paleness, which must correlate to being naked, which is more sensual, I suppose. The key is, if the color brings out your nakedness, eyes, or hair color, guys dig it, haha.

(There are tons of articles on choosing flattering colors for your skin tone, but I found this one from Fashion Beans to be fun to read and on the dot! I know, it's a men's fashion site, but I find stylish men are the best at picking pleasing colors for their attire.)

3. Bring out the curves. I'm flat as a board with a thin torso, so the dress above gives me the illusion of more bust with the folds and gathering at the top, and the waist cinching helps to create that contrast. Thus nowadays, when I shop for dresses, I try to find ones that have pleats or ruffles on top and a cinched waist.

4. Head and shoulders. This one is kind of weird, but head and face proportions also play a role in looking good. I noticed that majority of fashion models have tiny faces compared to the rest of their bodies. Or they have huge hair covering parts of their faces. Well, I have a round shape face (and my head is larger compared to my small body), so I find v-shape neckline helps the face look less round and more elongated and slimmer. Also, I have sloping shoulders, so skinny straps always slip off, and some halters and strapless dresses makes my shoulders look more sloping. Thus, the sleeveless or wider strap dresses look and feel more comfortable on me. In general, being comfortable and confident always looks better!

5. The leg proportions. Skirt hemline 0-3 inches above the knee is the safest and most flattering for all ages and body types. The higher waist placement of my dress above also gives the illusion of longer legs. And neutral heels are a must for shorties.

Lastly, a fun tip I learned recently is "wearing a jacket as a cape." My dad bought this black velvet blazer for me when I was in high school. He found it at a thrift store. It has sentimental value to me, but I realize the fit isn't great (too boxy and long for my frame), but I cannot part with it and too cheap to take it to the tailors, so draping it on my shoulders as a cape gives it new life!

What are your most flattering styles/tips?

Massimo Dutti Brogues

I first heard about Massimo Dutti from the wonderful Fast Food & Fast Fashion, and have been intrigued with their shoe selections since. I finally decided to order something from them during the July sales when these NYC limited edition leather brogues were around $79 (marked down from ~$220). Also being heavily influenced by menswear fashion lately, I decided to try these out.....
Gasp! They are gorgeous!

The packaging made me feel like I was opening a gift from the King of Spain or something....

The size 36 (US 6) fits true to size. The shoes are well-made and have that expensive leather furniture smell. Here's how they look on me with different outfits:

In actuality, I had a difficult time trying to figure out how to style these shoes. The shoes look beautiful on their own, but I felt dowdy in them. I'm thinking the problem is that the brown color doesn't suit my complexion and the heel is too low for my short legs. The sturdy leather also pinched the sides of my feet (bunions), so I decided these weren't going to work out for me. Thank goodness for the free returns.

Maybe brogues/oxfords are not suited for me after all. I'll leave 'em for the boys to look good in, or leggy girls like this gorgeous model from Massimo Dutti:

Oxfords are trending this fall. If I'm ever tempted to try this style again, must remind myself to keep the shoes more dainty like these from Wendy's Lookbook.

Darn, aren't these shoes so beautiful though?

Show me the Manet!

I love these paintings from French painter Edouard Manet...
I actually do not enjoy eating oysters, but they are interesting to look at, and people who eat them are also interesting to look at, haha. They always remind me of the funny scene from one of my favorite movies, Mr. Bean's Holiday, lol!
Who in the world is George Moore? He had style!
Aren't the best things to capture in photos (or paintings) are fashion and food?

White Summer Skirts

I had entertained the idea of having a white skirt in my wardrobe for a long time, but haven't actively searched for one, since I'm usually paranoid about panties showing through and white items staining too easily. I had saved some magazine pictures of white skirts I loved in my old scrapbook to remind me of the styles I would prefer, if I ever were to shop for a white skirt...
But it wasn't until I saw To Brighten My Day's and Petite Hues' white skirts, that I became super inspired to run out and buy a white skirt already!

My first instincts were to check out LOFT (one of the few retailers that I can always trust for quality, affordability, and petite sizing). Just in luck, they were having a 40% sale, and this skirt qualified what I had in mind....

Size 00P (waist measures 12.75" across, total length measures 17.25")
was on sale at $26.70
Also wearing old J.Crew Stretch Perfect Shirt in size regular XXS and Forever 21 studded flats
Review: This 100% cotton skirt is very light-weight and almost gauzy. I have a feeling it'll probably shrink a whole size in the machine-washer/dryer (thus, I'll be hand-washing and hang-drying mine). It fits comfortable on me (might be loose on tinier petites). It is also lined in a soft cotton material, which helps decrease the sheerness. Overall, I really like the pleated details and A-line shape. The best part for me is that the length still looks good with flats. The lightness of the skirt would definitely keep me cool for hot summer days. It's a keeper, even though I don't know how long the skirt will last....must be careful not to eat any sloppy-joe's or spaghetti with this skirt ;)

How do you keep your white items spotless and clean? Any tips?

Google Gorey

I was so thrilled to see Google's homepage today in celebration of artist Edward Gorey's birthday! I <3 his drawings! Blame it on endless hours of watching PBS channel when I was younger living at my grandma's house (the only channel that wasn't so static-y on her old TV).

You know I love fashion in art! And Edward Gorey's characters have serious fashion! I highly recommend rummaging through his books for inspiration on whimsical and glamorous 1900 -1930's attire, if you are into that!

Pleated A-line skirt

I've always been a fan of the A-line skirt (or circle skirt? I'm not sure what is the difference), but I have been hesitant if I can pull off this style, since it might either make me look too childish, or frumpy since I dislike wearing form-fitting tops. My preferable way to wear these skirts are with cozy, over-the-hips cable sweaters as in these old magazine/catalog clippings I saved in my scrapbook:

Pleated A-line skirts are definitely IN style! The best part is that I don't have to worry about lumpy butt or panty-lines showing. I scored this camel pleated skirt at Forever21 Essentials (size XS) clearance rack for $9.99 recently.

Unfortunately, I don't own any cable sweaters anymore (due to mild weather where I live), and the best I could do is this New York & Co. cardigan....but then I noticed that perhaps the 'over-the-hip' sweater length only works for tall models and not for petites with short legs....
Untucked vs. Tucked
Which way do you think looks better?

Either way, I'm happy with this purchase, and hope to learn more ways to style it!  On my blog radar, I'm very inspired by: Sew Petite Gal's DIY skirt, To Brighten My Day's circle skirt, Stylish Petite vintage skirt, Classy Girls Wear Pearls J.Crew skirt, Sydney's Fashion Diary burgundy skirt and DIY skirt here, and Her Waise Choice who frequently sports these type of skirts.

Ooh, Forever21 has some more fun ones online:
A-Line Polka Dot Skirt  black/white $14.80
Striped Waist Skirt winter white $22.80
Holiday Brocade Skirt black/gold $24.80 - as seen on Poor Little It Girl - she's only 4'11"! Love if when I see stylish petites!

Sequins

I blame it on those sequined ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz for turning me into a little girl attracted to all things glittery...and the sparkly love affair continues as an adult!

Of course, being older and wiser, I've been trying to only add "neutral" sequined items in my wardrobe. Sequins are most wearable in black, pewter, muted gold, silver grey, blush, dusty lilac, and ivory in my opinion. The most memorable sparkly items from my favorite fashion bloggers include: I am Khatu's shorts, Extra Petite's skirt, Dress Up Files' dress, Confessions of a Call Center Gal's top, and maybe Classy Girls Wear Pearls glittery heels.

So my recent sequin purchase was this Forever21 Sequined Sheer Back Top. I'm still debating if it's a keeper or not due to loose fit. Perhaps I can pull it off...
$19.80
Size Small - Gunmetal
The sequin top would be great for holiday parties, girls-night-out, or in my case...dancing Xbox 360 Kinect Michael Jackson style in my brother's gaming room (by myself, haha).

Also, here's some old magazine/catalog clippings I saved in my personal scrapbook, reminding me how timeless sequins are...

The man in me

I don't know what is in me lately, but I'm attracted to the way men's clothing are layered. Again, in the J.Crew December 2012 catalog, I kept flipping back towards the men's section for outfit ideas.
Other looks from the J.Crew men's section I'm loving:
from page 105
from page 120
Makes me wonder if women styled these men, or I'm turning masculine, haha.

Other inspirations:....I found these guest judges from Project Runway All Stars Season 2 Episode 3,  Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra to be adorable!
Fashionable lumberjacks, layering with plaid and checks is wonderfully perfect for this time of the year. But it looks like these guys always look like this though...who knew they design such pretty women clothing (http://www.costellotagliapietra.com)!

Yes or no for Maxi length coats?

A few weeks ago, I arrived fashionably late to a friend's wedding reception, which lead to an undesirable faraway parking spot and freezing bare legs. Although I had on my toasty J.Crew double-cloth thinsulate lady day coat covering my short dress, it only gave warmth from knee up. I never wear tights with my cocktail dresses because the colored ones seem to make my legs look shorter and more crooked. As for pantyhose, I've never found one that matched my skin tone. Thus, nothing covered my naked legs and they were painfully cold! I wished and I wished that my coat was longer to cover all. Thus begins the search for a Maxi Coat!
ASOS Belted Midi Coat (bought on sale with discounts ~$122)

Most maxi-length coats I browsed online were at least 50+ inches in length, which seems too long for my 5'1" petite frame, so I tried to be clever in ordering a "midi" length coat in hopes that it turns out to be the right ankle length for me.

This ASOS coat is actually a pretty soft, somewhat plushy wool. As with most wool (even my J.Crew metro coat), it's a bit itchy on bare skin, but not too bothersome I had worse itchy wool. On a scale of 0-5 for itchiness, I would probably rate this a 2. Because of the length and material, it's also heavier than most coats I own. I thought the batwing-like armholes were interesting...better ventilation and comfort for the pits. Overall fit is loose. I sort of feel like I'm wearing a house robe.

Do you think this coat is too big? Are you a fan of Maxi-length coats? Should I continue the search?

Lofty shopping

Currently sofa shopping for my new house, and after 3 furniture stores, I think my favorite so far is this cognac leather sectional at Copenhagen:
Sleek, warm, sturdy, love it!  But at $3995! Way too costly for my budget :(
I wonder if they'll have something like a half-off sale....to the wishlist.

What kind of sofas do you like?
